wearable

These photos document the Whisper wearable wristband-mounted FM synthesizer. The circuit is based around an Attiny45 AVR chip that is programmed to read analog voltages from 3 pins and use these as parameters in a simple FM synthesis routine. Sound is output through one of the small speakers I bought for the Whispering Islands project. All of the electronic connections are made using conductive thread purchased from Sparkfun.com. The controls consist of 2 pressure sensitive fabric pads underneath the sky-blue patch, and one button-knob (a 100k trimmer pot glued to a brown button). About half-way through making the first prototype, I decided to start over from scratch and rebuild the whole thing in a more organized way. The current version is more or less finished, but I will be working on some little finishing touches like embroidery and some protection for the circuit. pixlpa.com/news/whisper-wearable-synth-wristband

panels

Painted works, Acrylic on Panel. In my paintings, I am interested in capturing a sense of geography or landscape that evokes the dynamics of social and political interchange and complex systems of emotion, thought, and narrative. Much of my work is a reflection on landscape painting or map-making as a method of tracing these ephemeral moments as marks in space and time.

video stills

These are screenshots from live video processes I've created using MaxMSP/Jitter, GLSL, etc. These processes typically blend OpenGL 3D rendering tools with pixel processing and custom GLSL programs. Many of the paramaters are controlled by an audio source. A lot of this stuff never gets recorded or edited down to a finished product. Thus these screenshots are often the only record of a developing moment in time that is the culmination of hours of programming and adjusting the parameters of often unstable processes.

diego rivera gallery

This is an installation that I put together in collaboration with Josh Pavlick and Chika Sato. This show was the first iteration of my work with thread and felt that has continued to develop into a unique practice informed by my 2D work. My intention here was to treat the gallery space in a fashion similar to the way I treat marks on paper or panel, creating an abstract floating landscape. Chika created a sort of poetry-by-numbers mapping of the gallery space where each number corresponded to a bit of text. This embedding of textual meaning in otherwise non-descript spaces created an interesting textual relationship with my similar, but more abstract, visual treatment.

tiny continent

During the process of making my work, I often play with these little bits of things lying around the studio. I like to create piles, clusters, and landscapes with these simple materials and forms. This photo series depicts the playful little world that I inhabit during the creative process.

whispering islands

Preparations for a site-specific installation planned for the Hayes Valley Market space. I'm expanding on previous installation techniques with thread and felt, by building these little floating felt islands. There will be seven such islands, each embedded with simple sound making electronics that create intermittent, rhythmic bursts. The islands will be dispersed throughout the space, suspended from a mesh of thread. I'm also considering adding some simple mechanical sound components as well, but we'll have to see if there is time. The pillowy shapes were a false start where I thought I was going to make the islands stuffed. In the end I decided to just use the structure of the felt to create the forms.
